The Bad Effects of smoking

Numerous medical and scientific studies conducted over the past decade irrefutably prove the devastating effects of smoking on the body. Stats show that the number of people killed by smoking is increasing every year. One possible reason is that many smokers don’t understand the long term health risks associated with smoking. Cigarette smoking remains to be the most widely used form of tobacco smoking.

The effects of smoking vary from person to person as it will depend on the person’s vulnerability to the chemicals in cigarette It will also depend on the number of cigarettes a person smokes per day, the age when the person first started to smoke, and the number of years the person has been smoking.

No matter what good one imagines to get out of smoking, there are enough reasons to quit it. Cigarette smoking can cause a number of serious health problems and fatal diseases as it contains many harmful chemicals including nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, arsenic, acetone, DDT, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia. Heart disease, stroke and lung cancer are the foremost life-threatening effects of this risky habit.

What’s even more dangerous is that smokers drag others with them to ill health and possibly to the grave as well. How grave are the effects of smoking? According to WHO, secondhand smoking kills about 600000 people every year.

A large number of countries, mostly developed ones have enacted smoking bans in public places. But still the use of tobacco among youth has been on the rise. Therefore, tobacco control and smoking cessation programmes are important health issues facing our society today.

One such international initiative is Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) which investigates the tobacco use in school going youth of 13 to 15 years of age. Next in US, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) Series is being prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The data in the weekly MMWR are provisional, based on weekly reports to CDC by state health departments.

The good news is that the human body is amazingly resilient and when you quit smoking the self healing process begins. Benefits of quitting include long life, reduced medical expenditure, cleaner environment and healthy family.
