Is Alcohol a Brain Cells Killer?

Filed under: Uncategorized — martin @ 8:31 pm

With alcohol consumption becoming prevalent in the society these days, people would often be curious about the effects of alcohol in the body especially the brain. A frequently asks question would be “does alcohol kill brain cells?” because it is a frightening to think that alcohol could really destroy the brain cells. The answer to the question is that alcohol does not destroy the brain cell but is still capable of damaging the neurons of the brain.
The brain can be compared to motherboard of a computer because our brain tells the body what to do. We can move our hands, walk, and think, store memory, express emotion and many more because of our brain. Neurons are the one responsible in sending messages to the brain in order for it to function. It’s like the wires in a computer if one is damage data are not sent properly. If the neurons get damage it can result to memory problems, confusion, lack of muscle coordination, amnesia and paralysis of the eyes.
Most alcoholics lack proper nutrition especially the Vitamin B1 or the thiamine. Lack of thiamine will result to Wenicke-Korsakoff syndrome where in there is loss of neurons in some part of the brain. To avoid this condition eating thiamine rich food such as meat, whole grain, cereals, peas, soy beans, nuts, and dry beans can help keep the body nourished with Vitamin B1.
A person who is already suffering from alcohol addiction or alcoholism should ideally seek help for safe and effective recovery because suddenly abstaining drinking of alcohol can lead to alcohol withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms of alcohol varies from mild to severe and in severe cases it can cause death especially when delirium tremens is experienced.
Furthermore, brain is not only the organ susceptible to damage due to drinking alcohol. Liver and heart can also get damage from constant alcohol abuse. Being intoxicated can also caused accidents that can kill you as well as others especially in car accidents.  There have been many alcohol related death caused by illness or accidents so one needs to think twice before abusing alcohol.
