As we grow older there are certain forces and processes that are inevitable when it come to our bodies. The face we stare at in the mirror when we are seventy is very different than the one we saw when we were twenty. Skin loses its elasticity and sags. Eyelids droop, cheeks take on a sunken quality and fat collects in places like our neck. You can watch what you eat and get plenty of exercise but most of these things will happen anyway. The only real way to try and change this is through cosmetic surgery. We’ve all heard about liposuction, face lifts and liposculpture but few of us know what those terms really mean.
Liposuction can be applied to many areas of the body. It simply refers to the process of taking fatty tissues away from a place where the patient does not want it to be. This is accomplished by basically vacuuming the fat out of the body. Facial liposuction is just what it sounds like, applying the process of liposuction to various areas of the face. It can be either a minor procedure or a much more complicated one depending upon how many areas are being worked on.
Facial liposculpture is a distinctly different procedure which has two parts. The first part is a liposuction procedure where excess fat is taken away from a part of the body such as the abdomen, butt or thigh. It is being removed not because the patient has requested a liposuction procedure there, but because the fatty tissues that are extracted are being harvested so that they can be used in the liposculpture process itself.
After the material has been collected the second part of the process, the liposculpture, can be performed. During the initial patient consultation the doctor will find out what facial features the patient wants to change or restore. The lips, brow, areas surrounding the eyes, and the cheeks are places that are commonly changed. The surgeon will sculpt these areas by injecting the fatty tissues that were previously collected. The end result should be a face that either restores what the patient once had, or gives them the face they’ve always wanted.
