Smoking kills millions of people worldwide every year and unfortunately, the number is still rising. In United States alone, there are 434000 smoking related deaths per year. Smoking-related illnesses claims more American lives than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide and illegal drugs combined! In a nutshell, smoking is extremely hazardous to the body, to the immediate family, to the society, to the environment and to the economy.

Around 700 chemical additives are found in cigarettes, some of them being toxic in nature. Once lit, a cigarette reaches a temperature of nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The high temperature helps release thousands of chemical compounds, including poisonous substances like carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, at least 43 carcinogens, and numerous mutagens.

All of these are drawn into the body when a smoker inhales. The end result? Smoking kills. The problem is that smoking dangers come in a variety of forms. You don’t have just cigarette smoke dangers to worry about, smoking a cigar, hookah, sheesha, narghile, etc has similar devastating effects. One of the adverse effects of smoking is secondhand smoking.  Did you know that secondhand smoke – the smoke breathed out by smokers and the smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, cigar, or pipe – has twice as much nicotine, and five times the carbon monoxide, as the smoke you inhale? In short, it contains a high amount of carcinogens.

One of the main dangers of smoking is due to nicotine which is found naturally in tobacco. It is an extremely addictive substance.
